First Liturgy in Petersburg, Alaska

On Bright Wednesday 2008, perhaps the first ever Orthodox liturgy was served in the home of Kevin and Tatiana Stelmach in the town of Petersburg, Alaska.  Petersburg is a brief 25 minute flight south of Juneau. A community of about 3,000 people, it was founded early last century by mostly Norwegian fisherman.  The strong Norwegian flavor is still very much evident.  In addition, now there are a few Russians living there who want the Church as part of their families' lives. Pray for the families and for the work of the Church in Petersburg.

St. Nicholas Parish blesses the Waters of Gastineau Channel

Great Blessing of the Waters - 01/22/11

On January 22, Fr Simeon and Parishioners of St. Nicholas blessed the Waters of the Gastineau Channel in conjunction with the Old Calendar Feast of Theophany.

The Orthodox Church teaches that Christ came into the world not just to save humanity, but to restore all of creation, which was damaged by Adam and Eve’s fall.  To this end, throughout the Orthodox world, churches bless the waters of their community, lifting it up to God and asking him to descend upon the waters and sanctify them.

Though St. Nicholas in Juneau celebrated Theophany on the New Style Calendar, we chose to bless the waters on the 22nd to highlight Bishop Benjamin’s travels throughout the Bristol Bay area blessing the waters there and highlighting the threat to the Traditional lifestyles of the native population that the proposed Pebble Mine.  This mine threatens salmon spawning areas, and would leave a lake of toxic waste behind a 740 foot high earthen dam long after the mine has been tapped out.  This dam is 10 times larger than the one that recently failed in Hungary, and will be much more remote and difficult to access in the event of failure.  Read more about Bishop Benjamin’s trip at http://www.oca.org/news/2387.

Sam McClain colection - The Sitka Deanery

The Orthodox Churches of Southeast Alaska

As we unpacked the Sam McClain colection, we were pleased to find paintinghs of most of the church buildings that have been a part of the Sitka/Southeast Alaska deanery in the past.

In addition to the current buildings, there were also paintings of buildings that have ben destroyed and/or replaced over the years, such as St. Andrew in Killisnoo (destroyed 1928), St Sava in Douglas (destroyed 1937), and the original St. Michael's in Sitka (replaced in 1843).
