As part of the Rector's duties at St. Nicholas Juneau, I have also been assigned to care for St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Hoonah, AK. Hoonah is a small Tlingit Village of around 800 on Chichagof Island.
Keep watching this page for news, updates and announcements about Fr Simeon's travels to Hoonah.
Founded in 1929 and constructed from "rescued" timber, this small community has been without a full-time priest since Fr. Michael Williams, the only Tlingit ever ordained to the priesthood, fell asleep in the Lord.
Since most of the timber was reused, much of it is at least 10 years old, and the building in this small and poor community has seen better days. The walkway surrounding the church has collapsed and is too dangerous to use, limiting processions to a minimum due to the building being built on a hill. The roof was also damaged a few years ago and though it has been repaired, there is still water damage that needs to be addressed.
If you would like to make a tax deductable donation to help this struggling parish, please contact Fr. Simeon at the Juneau rectory.
